Mikhail Eisenstein - Papenka

If we confidently declare Riga to be the European metropolis of Art Noveau we should not forget one of the most outstanding creators of Rīga's architecture - the architect Mikhail Eisenstein (1867-1921). Examples of his work can be seen most clearly in the houses on Alberta Street, which are full of hidden passion and mysteries, and remain the swansong of Riga Art Noveau. There are no places similar to Alberta Street in Rīga or anywhere else in the world. In particular, the extravagantly rich and fashionable house facades decorated with peculiar monsters and all kinds of geometrical lines, rectangular and circular compositions, stylised flower motifs, creepy masks with faces contorted in terrifying grimaces sculpted in unimaginable angles and proportions, lions, monsters with wings, strange sphinxes and naked weary-looking female figures. All of that inspired the imagination and fantasy of little Sergey Eisenstein.
